Honestly, this review might be more embarrassing than the one your site gave of Upstream Color in the Spring. The script may have been a hit on Black List, but proved predictable and basic when put on the screen--that fault being Villeneuve's. Every major answer to the mystery of a thriller shouldn't be so easily identifiable--scenes like the body under the church and the mother watching the home video aren't clues, they're actual answers and all come in the first act of the film. That's troubling.

Aside from great performances by Jackman and Gyllenhaal, the cast is horribly wrong. Melissa Leo stands out as the biggest joke and her wig was terrible.

And that final scene? If you're gonna leave on a cliffhanger/drop-off, I'm not really sure the one they give us is right--there's absolutely no mystery in it ON TOP OF the fact that the situation that is presented in it is entirely unrealistic.

I'm completely beside myself that anyone is raving about this film. Put it up next to a real thriller like Se7en and it looks amateur at best.

While this movie was great at bringing forth a tone/emotional ambiance that hung on me even throughout the night after watching I think the plot hinges on too coincidental incidences, is too long by far, isn't convincing in regards to the main plot devices, and is troubled as the reviewer said by a dual POV construction among other flaws. Still the chill that settled on me was real and I have to respect it for that.

Jeez, this reviewer seems biased when it comes to Gyllenhaal. I'm not saying the man can't act, he's a damn fine actor, but come on! Every positive review (meaning: most reviews) coming from respectable sites and/or critics raves about Hugh Jackman's tour de force and incredibly layered, nuanced performance in this film. All you did was spend two sentences on his performance that compare his character with that of the Wolverine twice for reasons unknown (but this does make it seem like you haven't seen any of his other performances and don't take him seriously) and damn him with faint praise to again draw Gyllenhaal into the picture. It's rather curious.
