I believe this is beginning of an unfortunate trend in which a director\’s released cut will be seen as merely a suggestion as to how the story should be realized. The director not as creator, but as a brand named cinema stylist.

Here is what I imagine coming: for $99.95, you get a copy of the director\’s version plus dailies and elements from which you can craft your own version of your favorite movie using the editing software that comes with your Mac. Pick a better take. Lose that scene you always hated. Craft an ending you like better. Change the music. Then stream it to your TV and share with friends.

Now YOU too can be a director (without the pesky 5:30a call time…)
