NYCQBNATIVE; I\'m glad you enjoyed the film, and your comment sheds some light on how Scorsese can sleep better at night, but it\'s not really ALL about context when you\'re critiquing films - it\'s more about the essentials in cinema - acting, script, direction, editing, etc. - and how they work together to elevate a film. In \'Revenge\' - they simply do not work at all, in my opinion of course. It\'s a universal language and should be treated as such. If you want to look at Hong Kong actions films that are really fun - Infernal Affairs, Hard Boiled, etc. In any case, thank you for writing a thoughtful comment in lieu of a single snarky line. A rarity nowadays.

Completely agree that this is an unfair critique of the film. It is thin on story, but makes up for it with great action moments that (I can only guess) depict the depravity of real events. It\'s a well-intentioned film and it delivers the adrenaline/squirm-in-your-seat fix as can be expected of an Andrew Lau film.

wow. i just saw this at the museum of moving image in queens this evening, and it really is just your typical action flick with fast-paced scene-to-scene forward-moving skim plot. not that different from any other hollywood blockbuster action film. if anything, probably more interesting than most, being that this is set in a world that hollywood has not historically dared to venture into. this was an overly harsh critique of the film that was undeserving. you know you\'re walking into an action film about the \'chinatown gangster underworld\'. you can\'t really expect anything more (or deeper) than that, nor should you. if you are, you\'re better off watching some zhang yimou film from the 90s. this is an andrew lau film. and if you\'re well-versed in his style of filmmaking, it\'s a decent export of his talents to a culture and world (hong kong vs. nyc) that is generally unfamiliar to him. overall, a decent effort by andrew lau and andrew loo. acting-wise, you need to look at the overall landscape of asian americans in film. how many opportunities do they have to act in general, not to mention in roles that are beyond stereotypical (poor servant, submissive, poverty porn, dragon lady, whorish) roles? the fact that they get to see themselves on screen, in a feature film, in a world somewhat familiar to some of them, is an incredibly opportunity. it\'s all about context, nikola.
