Wow, incredible that you think Kaede is only a \"supportive girlfriend.\" What movie did you watch? She\'s also going through some issues that come along growing up, specially when your parents are as selfish and strict as hers. And certainly, when she meets the protagonist, she is also able to express who she really is to someone else for the first time. What a weak review, indeed.

Disappointing movie indeed. It\'s pretty but it\'s going nowhere. Not the best Mamoru Hosoda.

Well spoken Gian. I can only presume Lytellton must be dealing with his own human darkness and I hope that your comment allows him to re-evaluate and let the movie fill the hole in his heart.

Honestly man, the only thing that is unsatisfactory is your weak critique.
No wonder you don\'t like the characters, since you ignore their defining traits and focus on aspects that are not relevant in the story, ie why did James Bond become a spy?
Then you continue to hate on the characters for showing humanity.
Family issues, curiosity, pain and dealing with it, yeah who even sympathises with that.
As for your problem with Kaede, honestly the only one that is being sexist here is you being so deliberately sensitive about it.
She is a strong, intelligent character who exhibits many qualities such as honesty, decisiveness and emotional intelligence.
Excuse her for not being every Tumblr user wet dream of a protagonist.
Finally you accudr the final scenes for betraying the thematic but I do think it feels like that all, since there was so much build up for for action and conflict resolution.
But maybe they should have just had some tea and talked it over.
Your comparing of Miyazaki and Hosoda stories is the exact thing that did not let you enjoy the movie, let alone understand the what the story was trying to tell you.
Miyazaki and Hosoda have different styles, and if that already is a problem for you maybe you should have not watched the movie.
Trying to criticize art in general is good thing, and asking questions is good, but art may have answers for you. You are just not looking for them in the right places.
