This film is nothing like the Thing because it isn't trying to be, it is however VERY SIMILAR to a very good film called Isolation (2oo5) another rather moody film that is rather enjoyable.
Make no mistakes, the middle act of the film is fumbled poorly, and the last 4 minutes are downright groan inducing nonsense, but otherwise it's a very solid film.

Call me crazy, but that Thing prequel seemed to stand on its own merits. I do wish that reviewers would stick to reviewing the film at hand as opposed to dredging their vast (?) viewing catalogs.

This is the second article I've read on Indiewire today where some joker uses one movie to bash another. This time, it's 'The Thing.' The author spends an entire opening paragraph extolling the virtues of John Carpenter's classic, only to say that this move is NO 'THE THING.' Well, of course it isn't. I hate myopic film criticism.
