Again, with many of my response to films or other pieces of art, I really hate to imply that the filmmakers should've done something else, but: Let's say, since Kelly has felt so out of it, she has simply become a little more sensitive to others who are, well, a little more out of it as well. So let's just say she was trying to throw Cal a bone for once to be nice, and then he just becomes obsessed with her and won't leave her the hell alone, but she just doesn't want to be mean so she continues to be nice to him, with no romantic relationship intended — and one she would never get involved in..A scene in which she let's the sucker down would've been incredibly gripping. (An objective like that for Kelly's character would've made her a little easier to empathize with.)
