Although, I love Keira Knightley & the most of the roles she plays... this was not one of those times. Her character was a bit too irritating & overbearing. I felt was a huge mistake made by the directors. I\'m a fan of all things Jack Ryan but this one will not be in rotation at my home.

With the dollar and gold now both gaining value (normally they go in opposite directions) along with the enormous amount of US Treasuries held in foreign sovereign accounts the plot could be feasible if it replaced Russian oil reserves with Chinese gold holdings.

" What's kind of interesting is that the Ryan-surviving-a-crash detail was concocted on the fly by that film's director, the deeply brilliant John McTiernan, and was never part of the Clancy/Ryan canon."

While I agree with most of what has been said in this review, the statement above is in error. In the novel Patriot Games (which I am currently rereading following the author's untimely death) Ryan's history is explained in some detail. This includes a brief time in the Marines that is ended when, as a newly commissioned lieutenant, the helicopter he is in crashes resulting in a major back injury. Ryan the works on Wall Street where he meets Cathy Muller who is studying to be an ophthalmologist and knows a surgeon who repairs Ryan's back. It is after this that he turns his back on Wall Street and starts teaching history at Annapolis before being recruited by the CIA.

This was not something thought up by the director, and while not being covered in "real-time" in any of the books, it is definitely part of the canon and a major part of the backstory of the character that is referred to multiple times throughout the rest of the series.

Looking forward to seeing this movie. Besides being a great actress, Keira Knightley has said some fascinating things over the years. One quote grabbed my attention so much, I ended up writing an essay on it: http://wp.me/p2wzRb-8n
