I just saw the film this evening. I thought it was a good film, not a great film. While I agree with a great deal of what the writer says here, one thing I struggled to get around was just how relaxed the authority figures were in this film. I know we have seen films and TV shows in which the inmates have some pull with prison officials but in this film, it is almost as if the inmates truly do run the asylum. Just the sheer level of violence and illegal activity that is basically ignored and what the inmates are allowed to get away with made this film somewhat realistic and difficult to take seriously at times. But that's to the poweful acting and a great deal of scenes touching on many different ideas, emotions, and struggles, I was able to view it as a good film experience. But a classic? I'd have to disagree with that.

Saw this film this morning and it's excellent. Well worth the price of admission.
