"Perhaps the film's most notable surprise, given the way that directors have tended to be absorbed into the Marvel machine, is that Black's voice still comes through loud and strong"

I'll probably be hated for this, but I think this is a really, really, really bad movie. I have to say I've never been a fan of this character, but the two previous movies were funny, enjoyable, kind of smart so I understand why people liked them. (And for the ones who will attack me on this, I think Avengers, Captain America and even Thor are really great). But this one... Wow. I was not alone when I saw it and we were both desperate at the end.

Also, the film has a really terrific throwback to the first film in the flashback scene. The dramatic irony is quite powerful, and serves as an interesting way to reintroduce the viewer to Tony's hubris and arrogance.

Yeah, don't get the 'Spider-Man 3' comment. At all. If the film is a throwback to '80s action comedies (which it is, including a drug-deal-gone-bad for the inciting incident), then I don't really understand the point why ALL the villains need to be developed any further. OK, one MAJOR character gets underdeveloped in a subplot that needed further expansion, but Dale's Savin, for instance, don't need expansion. Why? Because he is a thug ... that's it, and that's about it. He doesn't need a tragic backstory, nuance or vulnerability. Did anyone watch 'Lethal Weapon' and want to hear about Mr. Joshua's greatest anxieties? No, because - honestly - I don't care about him, I care about the GOOD GUYS: Mr. Joshua, on the other hand, is a BAD GUY who serves his FUNCTION by providing a credible threat to OUR HEROES. 'Spider-Man 3' tries something completely different: it attempts to give ALL THREE villains TRAGEDY and VULNERABILITY, but it fails to incite pathos into these characters because Raimi and co. couldn't juggle all these arcs. Both films, therefore, deploy different approaches to their villains, so the comparison is frustrating. Yes, some villains should have pathos and depth, however - when a character's defining characteristic is that he is a THUG - then it's OK if the villain acts like a THUG. Also, I must reiterate Superzoom's thoughts: thank you Oliver for not being ENTIRELY INEPT in posting spoilers into your review. It's pretty sad that readers need to be GRATEFUL when we read a film review that doesn't ruin the experience for us, but I guess that's what happens in a post-Rodrigo Perez world.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Oliver, for limiting your story synopsis to one paragraph. I was considering boycotting any more Playback reviews, since the majority of them are 75% plot regurgitation and often give away pretty much every major plot point. Recounting a film's entire plot is not a review. That's how a kid tells his friends about a movie he just saw. We need more analysis and opinion and less plot.

Thanks for this advanced review! Love to hear that the old Shane Black magic is being preserved. If this movie goes more towards action-comedy than dark brooding superhero melodrama, I'm all for it. The strength of this franchise has always been Robert Downey Jr.'s personality, and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" demonstrated that Black is as kindred a soul as Downey has yet found in a writer/director
