Shit was bad from the 1600's to 1800's due to puerperal fever, when women first started going in droves to hospitals to deliver only to get some infection from hospitals not quite up to the sanitation requirements.

Doesn't it seem like Rob Lowe should have done a "More You Know" on this back in the late 80's or something?
