agree, the casting is great (oldest daughter the weakest but still serviceable and with some charisma), but the errors of directing and editing made this disappointing for me. the rhythm of getting to know the house and the family was rushed and we barely had a feel for them before things go wrong and then seemed very rushed to make room for the, as noted, ill-conceived cgi-fest that is the 2nd half of the film. would much preferred to have spent more slow beats with the family than deal with the mess the \'other side\' brought with it. all the performances were there, sam rockwell does very well especially, but it wasn\'t supported by filmmaking. and some key things in the original were diverged from in ways that lessened the impact. why not call her \'carol ann\' for goodness sake?? what a great name. and let\'s pay homage, really. but that\'s a picayune note. the more affecting mistakes were ones such as the time jump after they are in the house and it\'s clear what they\'re all up against when the family is worn-out, emotionally and physically from the past days traumas, and the blasé attitude they have toward the \'manifestations\' in the house all worked so very well in the original and was all but skipped in this version. big mistake of understanding what made the film great. also, the key to a lot of scares is: don\'t show the doll moving -- the second it becomes a real physical thing it loses it\'s terrifying mystery. imo. anyway. some good acting, some good jumps and images, ultimately i was disappointed, compared to the original, sure, but also on its own. ymmv.
