This review is absolutely spot on. Couldn't agree more. Great acting can't carry a film so utterly bereft of vigor. And whoever chose this soundtrack completely missed the point.

You really should be disappointed with that review, and for giving the film such a low grade especially after praising James' acting so much. If he's the most important part of the film and if his performance is so superb, why a C? Really don't understand your reasoning.

I usually rate the Playlist reviews but I disagree with this one, which strikes me as slightly lazy and descriptive; possibly Jessica has missed the debilitating theme of mental illness in this film. I have seen Filth a couple of times now and considering it has been made on a shoestring budget of money cobbled together from different sources, it is fantastic piece of film making. As mentioned above the book was supposed to be unfilmable, well that has been proved wrong and some, because it has been achieved in a cohesive piece of entertainment that starts with a man already mentally disturbed and progresses him to complete breakdown. The film will make you laugh, cringe, feel pity, feel disgust, feel awe and sometimes all of these in one scene! I haven't been so affected by a film since I came out of the Matrix many years back which seems a strange thing to say, but that film had me full of energy when I exited the theatre. Filth does differ as it plays and prods at your soul, how can you like this character when he is so vile and repulsive? It had me thinking about it for days after I had seen it and therefore I had to go back for a second viewing. The answer is the supreme power of James McAvoy who will be undoubtedly be overlooked for awards (yet again, while people focus on posh boy Cumberbatch, flavour of this month and yes there no chance he could have played edgy Bruce Roberston) due to risky and brave content of this film. And I should say the film is by no way explicit in terms of violence or sex scenes (no full frontals here), it this the dialogue and imagery that pushes the social morality that US distributors are will be fearing, which is funny from an industry quite content of throwing out violence as entertainment (which I don't mind by the way! see the matrix!). You can have quibbles about editing or hallucination scenes if you wish, but for me this all adds to the chaotic demise of this fascinating Bruce Robertson character, in fact what I thought I was viewing was the world from perspective of Bruce himself so chaotic editing and hallucinations added to the experience. McAvoy's amazing performance (the man has more range in his pinky that Ryan Gosling has in his entire repertoire) could not have been carried out if it wasn't for Jon S Baird's (director/screenplay) brilliant script derived from Welsh's dark novel. If you like bold challenging cinema, go and see this and you will not be disappointed!!!

Geez - They're having a hard enough time getting wide distribution for 'Filth' w/o Baird having thrown all the incendiary filth in the book at the screen.
You should have stuck to your resolve (instead of writing a mediocre so-called review that's more about the reviewer--"we"-- than it is about Filth).

Just once, I'd like to read a review of Filth that doesn't wind up reviewing Trainspotting instead. They may be based on Irvine Welsh novels but they tell completely different stories. No Welsh adaptation will be as good as Trainspotting. We all need to get over that and judge subsequent films like Filth on their own terms.
