I think we saw a different film. Frances Ha seemed underwritten, failed to approach the rhythms of real-life speech, and Gerwig couldn't make it seem as if she inhabited the part or meant those clunky lines. (And she sure doesn't convince as a dancer – whose idea was that?) It showed how good Diane Keaton is – although she did have better material to work with. The theme of female friendship was wasted.
