Agree with Joyce, I\’m 27 minutes into it now and so far it\’s been nothing more than a struggle to continue. The amateur cast is fittingly atrocious, the cinematography bland, but worst of all: nary a story in sight. Yang is far too indulgent making such an overly long film, as was the case with Yi Yi. Fat belongs on pork, not movies.

some good insights into the period, police state, corruption, japanese influence etc. but too long and melo-dramatic. not sure why this is considered a great film .

I watched a low quality VHS rip of this as well and loved it. I am thankful to hear the film is finally coming out on DVD. I hope Edward Yang's the Terrorizers also get the same treatment. The only way I could watch it was a crappy print someone uploaded onto YouTube.

I've only seen this movie on a low-quality torrent, but I can testify to its excellence. I can't wait for it to get a proper DVD release. More people ought to see this film.
