Uhhh.... Nary a false note? How about the fact that Koba was blatantly reinforcing stereotypes about people from the African diaspora? He was abused by humans, kept in cages all his life, blinded by his drunk master's cigarette and thus hates humans. He wasn't given the life of privilege that Caeser was. This isn't the racist part though. The racist part is that Koba is still turned, suddenly, into the villain of the film and his evil is framed as something intrinsic, rather than the result of the abuse that he has experienced and witnessed happening to many other apes. They also make a point of giving him negroid features and making him do a minstrel act before killing the two humans in the ammo outpost. His first acts of treason are taken out because Caesar refuses to heed his warning, which could have been a more important and complex point of contention, if the movie hadn't just fizzled out and settled on being ANOTHER story about how humans are good and need saving. It would have been a much more impressive and courageous movie if they had allowed the tensions between Koba and Caesar to exist, without it turning into another case of villainizing the already disabused.

As satisfying as the Ape storyline was, this review (and others I've seen) seem to gloss over how flat the human storyline is. The humans are uniformly one dimensional and wooden. Also, the lead human makes a ridiculous choice in the 3rd act that makes no sense (he wouldn't do it and the people he does it to would not take him seriously). And what is the point of Gary Oldman in this movie? If he is supposed to be the human counterpoint to Koba, then he pales in comparison. The story also plays out exactly as you would expect it. A sense of dread pervades, but it also takes us exactly where we knew we were going at a glacial 2 hour and 15 minute pace. That having been said, the ape storyline, characters and pathos are exquisite. It's too bad their human equivalents played like bad CGI.

It's amazing that film critics are totally content with movies like this - functional works of totally unoriginal entertainment. I'm happy to see critics focus on the film only, but what this movie represents on a macro level is too big to ignore. I'd love it if ThePlaylist posted the Onion review of this.

Watched it last night...truly a magnificent and poignant film filled with epic (yes, epic) and beautiful moments. This may sound like a hyperbole, but no, it's up there in the sequel pantheon and it's just a great standalone film.
