Feels great to be passionate enough about a movie to need to wade in. At the very least it\’s a great piece of cinematic art because it is wide open for interpretation. My experience differs from this review, I agree it\’s insane, totally bonkers, but surely it\’s satire, surrealism even. I wonder if there isn\’t a reading of the movie (I\’ve not read the book) where, similar to fight club, the character of Amy plays as Nick\’s persecutory/ambitious shadow, that\’s the only way Amy worked at all for me, she\’s a blank, more alien than human, a projection of Affleck\’s desire turned in on itself. The movie was less an attack on women than a vicious dissection of The Great White American Male. I thought it was shockingly subversive in the way it uncompromisingly turned a mainstream crime thriller into a bizarre, dreamlike parody of our surreal fraudulent society.

"Gone Girl" is a masterpiece for the ages. It deserves to score a Best Picture win and a Best Director win for David Fincher no matter what. It\’s a film of towering brilliance.

"Boyhood" was a great film ruined by the indie hype. It is a small precious gem that needs to be personaly discovered. I wished I knew nothing about it when I finally saw it, but then again I might never have; a conundrum.

Seems like every reviewer on IndieWire is a Fincher disciple. It would be great to just read an objective review of the filmmakers movies, or his merits without every other sentence making him to be the second coming.

The film is absolutely slight because the plot of Flynn\’s book is junk and Fincher sticks to it. However, he suffuses the movie with a lot of rich texture and that turns it into something more. Those elements are largely brilliant. But then you have to negotiate the fact that beside it is, in front of it it really, is an utterly ridiculous plot.

It\’s almost a shame Fincher didn\’t deconstruct the book in a major way and jettison the basic plot, BUT in following it, it does snake with surprises that interestingly defy the three act structure.

Now these surprises and twists are ludicrous, but I do understand the idea of going, "this is insane, this might be fun to make."

There\’s an odd contradiction in a couple of reviews where critics have branded the movie as slight before going on to detail themes of male/female identity, warped perceptions and public hysteria, which are hardly light weight themes. Intrigued, if Fincher\’s managed to touch upon those subjects within a straight forward pot boiler engine it might just be brilliant.

Boyhood was not half the film Gone Girl is in terms of technical or the subject matter or performance, and everybody showered praised on it. i think all these wanna-be filmmakers who turned out to be critics can not digest the apex of film-making by Fincher
