The "Laser" effects aren\’t there to "highlight the velocity and volume of ammunition both sides faced." They are tracer rounds, which are bullets treated with a phosphorous coating along with other chemicals. They were used on machine guns in WWII and are still used today. Usually every 3rd or 5th bullet would be a tracer round which lights up as it does in the movie to help the gunner see where his shots are ultimately going.

Got to agree with Jagernauth here; score hampered an already struggling film, good actors put in valiant efforts but were unable to counter the cliché character archetypes, and the gore almost felt like it was trying to substitute for substance. I would add that I found the editing choices with long cross fades and poor cut to\’s very dated, like they belonged in a low budget 80\’s action movie, and the cinematography was completely uninspired. I really felt like this was a giant missed opportunity and waste of a good premise. Clearly they spent a lot of money on the cast, set pieces, and special effects. I really thought Ayer was going to elevate here. But instead of nice, long takes and ratcheting up the tension of war and five war ravaged men in a confined space, the film seemed content to give three or four non-sequitor platitudes and a few big action sequences. It was almost like the decision was made to do the opposite of everything that could\’ve made the film rise above below average.

While some men may enjoy this movie, that won\’t make it a good film that stands the test of time. Good actors can\’t overcome a bad script and bad direction. I don\’t see an Oscars coming for this. Just more pre-release hype.

Many of the critics know that they can take pot shots at a film like this because their opinion will have very little effect on this type of film. People (re men) will watch this and love it and that will be reflected by the "other" tatometer…

I knew it. Every time this film and the word Oscar were mentioned in the same sentence, I would laugh. Ayer is a hack writer and an even worse director. Something akin to a John Milius for the new generation.

Interesting that this film has a much more impressive cast of Jewish actors (Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Isaacs) playing WWII soldiers than Pitt\’s Inglourious Basterds did.
