I really enjoyed the film and can't believe they showed it on this side of the planet. We're usually bombarded by billion dollar superhero franchises.

Rosario Dawson is a revelation and I'll watch anything with Vincent Cassel in it.
James McAvoy is amazing as always.

Coherent? Really?

That's the last word I would use to describe this P.O.S... I'm a huge Danny Boyle fan, but this movie was just terrible.

Wow, was that honestly the name of that supporting character? Tuppence Middleton? Seriously?

I'm English and even I think that's hilariously plummy.

'Coherent' ?

Not the version that's playing in UK cinemas. It's a spectacular mess. Of the three leads, only Vincent Cassel's character behaves in a remotely credible way. Rosario Dawson's character is ultimately just ridiculous. Mind you, I thought Millions was a silly mish-mash too. Steer well clear, folks.

I'd offer a counter argument and say that Trance is a shallow and meaningless story, with an incredibly dubious morality, ridden with plot holes and implasibilities, that moves further and further up its own arse until its frankly absurd conclusion/explanation. The biggest problem with the story is its lack of depth - or, to put it another way, the total absence of heart. It's an entirely empty execrcise, with no interest in emotion, only in being clever. And it really isn't that clever.

A comparison to Welcome to the Punch is interesting - a film with a similarly miscast James McAvoy, which is simply poor on almost every level, especially the acting, writing, and direction - and surprisingly amateur given Eran Creevy's mature work on Shifty. However for some reason Trance is a far greater disappointment, and not just because it's directed by Danny Boyle. Punch is simply a clunker, an overacted pudding, underconceived and overdesigned. Trance however, is wholly empty, all surface sheen - but worse, the filmmakers' neglect of emotional storytelling and eagerness to tie up the storyline in a neat bundle results in an objectionable, moral ugliness beneath its dazzling veneer.

Wonderful review, I'm really anxious to see it. I'm a big David Lynch fan and I think that Trance has much more in common with his films than Inception, like people keep saying.

Great review Oli, I wholeheartedly agree. This is his best, most wholly satisfying film since Trainspotting. It gets insane and twisty as hell at the end, but Boyle and co. rooted all that crazy in that aforementioned B story, which proves to be very important in the climax. Love this film. Can't wait to see it again.
