I think that prime directive of this film should have been to get people to love the characters and the world. It's not simply telling a story. I personally feel that Blizzard was breathing down the director's neck to check items off a checklist to the detriment of the freedom a director needs in crafting memorable characters with souls. Your review is exactly the kind I anticipated since I saw the very first teaser trailer. I would have loved for Duncan to gone in a completely different direction and turned it into a musical, I mean this fantasy genre takes itself so seriously and making the movie a musical would have turned everyone's preconceptions on their head. There needs to be artistic freedom no matter how valuable the franchise is or how many people have certain expectations. At the end of the day people want a good movie that they can love and only by thinking outside the box can you deliver it to them. Duncan did well on the CGI, it's a shame that those technological efforts aren't matched in its screenplay. This movie needed aspects of Mad Max, The Book of Mormon, and Gilbert & Sullivan in addition to the J.R.R. Tolkein and Game of Thrones aspects to reach its full potential. There simply isn't a task more difficult.

This is the first decent negative review of this movie I've seen. Every other critic has said that the movie was doomed because of it's source content, or that the effects were unsatisfactory. Some even brought in racial politics, which was fairly cringe-worthy.Thanks to Russ Fischer for a fair and honest critique.
