It\’s symbolic of her coming to terms with her hatred/distrust of men. Notice how she puts her hand in Rays just like she did in her rapist\’s hand. It shows growth after she remembered her rapist\’s face. And ya, it\’s tragic Ray (a bad person) is the only one around when she does finally grow to trust, but that\’s just how Pizzolatto rolls.
