Oh my, a restoration for the Age of Innocence? The film was shot only 20 years ago and well into an era where any restoration would be needless. After all, the original negative should be sitting there in the Sony vaults in pristine condition. It was only 1993! This so-called restoration craze is really making me mad now. The fact that a film is only 20 years old does not automatically make it a candidate for a "restoration" or whatever this means in the case of a film as recent as The Age of Innocence. I think that the 20th anniversary of its release simply gave the festival runners an excuse to showcase this brilliant film in all its glory on the big screen again. (Also the fact that its plot is based on the intricate relationships among the New York socialite should not have harmed.) And it definitely is a film to cherish on the big screen. Actually only last winter I caught a brand new HD screening of the film on a local movie channel and it was simply stunning, with many previously unseen details on costumes and sets on stunning display. I was expecting the Blu Ray to appear at the later end of the year and now it seems that this so called restoration will simply be a P&R stunt for that release. I repeat, there is no need for a further restoration if I have to believe in my own eyes from that recent broadcast.
