You need look no further than the guy the studio 'consulted with', Dan Mintz of DMG Entertainment, to see why they ended up doing what they did. From what I've heard, Mintz long ago sold out any allegiance to the U.S. in favor of cowtowing to the Chinese in pursuit of the almighty dollar (or 'Yuan', in this case). He appears to be a left-wing former New Yorker who has been living in China since the early 90's, his particular political ideology seeming right at home with the communist Chinese. In Mintz' opinion, the Chinese (and their record of repression, human rights abuses, hostility towards the United States, etc) are just "misunderstood". This is the SAME guy who, right about the time the remake of Red Dawn was being filmed, was at work producing what was to become "the number one movie in China!", the communist-funded 'The Founding of a Republic'. The film was commissioned by the Chinese Communist Party in order to 'commemorate' the 60th anniversary of their takeover of mainland China. Not tough to become the 'number one movie', I would imagine, when ALL good "members of the party" would be required to see it. Good work, Dan :)

As a reward for prostrating himself to the Chinese, Mintz was also given the plum of an estimated $200 million advertising budget for the recent Olympics, in Beijing. These days he fancies himself a 'rock star' in China, the recipient of many, many government favors and luxuries that normal Chinese people are specifically deprived of. Which is just how socialism and communism usually work themselves out -- after the death of millions of people, of course, in order to pacify the masses.

So, the 'suggested changes' by Mintz to the studio come as no surprise. When asked, Mintz' opinion of the remake of Red Dawn were that "The film itself was not a smart move." I.e., if it were up to Mintz, you would NEVER see this film. Especially with the much more realistic scenario of the United States coming under attack from the only other superpower left in the world, communist China. Even at the expense of spoonfeeding your fellow Americans a further load of propaganda (North Korea? Really?), you Wouldnt want to jeopardize your meal-ticket....right, Dan?

\"Changes WILL NOT eliminate all references to China though will give north korea a much larger role in the coalition that invades the US.\"
To me this sounds as if China will still be portrayed
as one of the villians in this film along with the
Russians and north koreans. and the north koreans
will get more screen time with the changes being
made. As long as China is still part of the coalition

Tripp Vinson you are so full of it. You sold out to
China, just admit it. And you just killed what could
have been a good film. Now the film will be known
as the keep China happy film and it will be a boxoffice

If Tripp has any sense they would release the
uncensored version in the US and the north korean
version in China. a north korean version in the US
is not going to go over well. people are not happy with the decision to change the villians to north korean just to make the Chinese happy, not a care in the world what the american moviegoers think about this, does the American opinion not count MGM. go to any website discussing this and you will see most people are NOT happy with these announced changes. Its your decision MGM, release two versions, most americans want the uncensored version, not some crappy last minute korean makeover.

As Libertas points out, it\'s also pretty racist of the filmmakers to think they can go in and change the dialogue and insignias on soldiers and turn them into a whole different nationality because \"all Asians look the same.\"
