Hear me now, believe me now.. I'm going to tell you how this ends….
Kohl and Hart never ended their "off the books" partnership that began with the Ledoux raid. Rust's broken man act is just his latest undercover role. He's been working this case the whole time he was "off the grid," and he came back to Louisiana when he–and Hart– were ready to bust it open. They're leading the detectives right where they want them– to the place where the truth about the cult murders will be exposed, no matter how many powerful and evil people try to keep it hidden. My prediction: the twist ending of True Detective will be that the partnership of Cohl and Hart never ended. Far from it.

SPOILERS: Great read once again. Really enjoy your analysis and thoughts on the ending. We've come full circle in a sense as its ending drew strong parallels to episode 1 and tree crime scene. The hunt for the Yellow King is now officially on, though seems Rust has been in the shadows this whole time already in pursuit. Interesting that Nic Pizzolatto mentions in the new Insider videos post show that since Rust was drinking during the interrogation, anything he said is basically inadmissible as a result.

Good article.

I thought Rust knew exactly where the meth lab was. I don't think he "tracked it"…in fact, when he said it was a skill his father taught him, I suspect Rust might have been an orphan, and had some connection with the Light of Day School in his youth.

I also think Rust made the phone call to Francis after the Yellow King confession. It seemed odd to me, just as it did to his partner, that Rust would want fingerprints from a public phone, unless he himself had used it and he avoided getting his prints on it.

What happened to the biker who was tied up in the back of Rusts pickup truck just before the meth lab scene?

The man that Hart shot was not Ledoux. Dora Langs ex husband told Hart & Cohle in the episode "Who Goes There" that Ledoux had a spiral tattoo on his back. The man that hart shot had an inverted pentagram on his back. That leaves me with the impression that Ledoux is still alive and they knew it but led everyone to believe he had died.

I think that the biggest safe assumption in serial murder fiction is the twist in this show. I don't think any murders actually took place. Dead bodies from natural disasters are being ritualized, but they werent killed. As for the Yellow King, I think it's the sun, referred to by Rust as the original god of the monkey, pointing at the star and interpreting it's own wishes in it. In other words, the Yellow King is a real , inanimate thing, given feelings. Like Hurricane Andrew?

I think there is more to Rust's story than being a undercover cop. He talked about being treated for PTSD, he also cautioned Ginger and the crew that they had something like 30 seconds to steal the stash and get out or it would be "another Mogadishu" – 1995 was two years after the ill-fated Mogadishu "Blackhawk Down" raid – it had yet to be seared into our consciousness. Also Rust's skills at clearing the room in the stash house were of military precision, as was his approach to the meth lab (finding booby traps) and they way he took one knee to try and hit Dewall with a handgun shot. He also handled and AK (with drum magazine) like a pro. Maybe I'm reaching, but that Mogadishu line stayed in my head – not sure what effect this will have on the outcome if any, but I think it adds another layer to his mystique.

There is no way Rust is involved with any ritualistic murders. While he was alone with Ledoux gun pointed toward Ledoux's assistant he asked him something like "why antlers?" This indicates to me that he truly believed he had his suspect.
Another observation is that Marty claims his real sin was inattention as opposed to adultery. This is evident as we watch his girls grow older. It is also evident in the tree with the tiara still sits years later. Did anyone else notice the grass on the front lawn which his young daughters were rolling around on was not freshly cut and appeared unkempt.

So I am wondering if somehow Rust's father isn't involved. They made a point of Rusts tracking abilities learned from bow hunting and it doesn't seem like he agreed with his father. Maybe his dads funeral was attended in photo instead of a victims. I think maybe Hart ran over Rusts daughter as well and just hasn't told anyone, like the Ledoux shooting. The girl on billboard I believe is the Stephanie girl who's name the new detectives hand Rust, but he already knows. I was so mad it ended last Sunday……wanted to know more

I think there will be a tie in with the tent church. If you look at Rusts beer can art, he is making people around a cross, like a congregation. Several references to flat circles, spirals are flat circles that keep spiraling, much like the detectives, the tree wreath is a flat circle, the Hart children's art work hung on walls. The triangular shape appears throughout as well. The 6, followed by 2 others, on Ledouxs chest can be interpreted as a triangle or a circle. Can't figure out reference to evil cherub paintings on abandoned church wall yet, but I am sure there's a reason.

Eternal Return or Eternal Recurrence is a hypothesis that, in various forms, has been speculated upon since ancient times, although it fell largely into obscurity with the rise of Christianity. Cohle's take on it is akin to that of Nietzsche – we not only return into the same lives but also repeat every choice and action. This could be described as a pessimistic take on Eternal Return (and Cohle describes himself as a pessimist in Episode 1); an optimistic take would argue that there are enough variables (ie random occurrences) to ensure that a variety of outcomes occur – we refer to them as alternative or parallel universes or timelines. But of course, with the infamous Yellow King of Carcosa lurking in the background, the optimist's take on Eternal Return would seem out of place. God I love this show.

The show hints that Martin's daughter has been sexually abused (the sexually explicit drawings, the acting out etc.) I sure hope that it was not Martin himself (though it could explain the 'fight' between Martin and Rust) with the reference to Martins 'lack of attention' being that maybe that he missed the obvious signs or that maybe she killed herself (for other non abuse reasons) and he did nothing (in hindsight) to identify or stop it.

If I were to guess, Rust has been 'uncover' working the crime due to the apparent size and scale of those involved (maybe taking them down one at a time?). I instantly thought of the UK Jimmy Saville scandal where it was rumored that the royal family was involved and kept people off the trail for years.

The series keeps getting better and better.
