Ken Russell was never going to be a long-term success in the Hollywood film factory. But he returned to a UK film landscape that had been decimated by Margaret Thatcher who had axed the 40% UK quota and the modest taxes which had allowed everyone from Michale Powell to Ken Russell to, and have exhibited on general release, great works of the imagination. And it was this, and not his eccentricities, which reduced him to having no option other than to dabble with cheap video in his garage.
So let's not have any regrets at his passing, let's have some real anger - anger at Hollywood and at Britain's supine political philistines.

This makes me so very sad. Ken Russell really opened my eyes to the possibilities in film. I believe I was a different person walking out of the theatre than I was going in, seeing his films. ‎Ken Russell was one of my favorite filmmakers, he wasn't at all afraid for you to hate him, or love him. His images could clang together like noisy pots and pans on a clothesline but he would leave it to you to wonder why the dishes were hanging with the laundry.

He was a true original, and love (and I do love most of them) or hate his films, you cannot deny his genius. He was also a friend, and a lovely one at that. I miss him already.
