Film will be dead and gone in 5-10 years. Raw video, 15 or more stops dynamic range, native iso of 2500+, plus "retro" film stock emulation will kill it. I'm sure it will be missed in the same way wet glass plate photographers missed it. Then after that lightfield cinematography and say goodbye to the focus puller too.

Almost all digital films you see in theaters still go through the digital intermediate process of scanning & coloring that celluloid goes through. When you count the price of secure harddrives you're storing your RAW digital files with, the rental prices of the cameras themselves, etc. the price difference between film and digital narrows dramatically.

And more importantly, the discipline gained from using film stock is a trait that up-and-comers are losing. The processes of rehearsal, blocking, practicing camera moves, and timing your takes are a thing of the past when you can hit a red button and let the camera roll for 15 minutes at a time. A lot of indie films I've crewed on don't even use slates! The laissez-faire approach many implement for digital filmmaking shows for the worse on their final product.

If you're making an indie film, take the extra time and money and shoot on film. You'll stand out BIG time on the festival circuit. And not just because of the format.

I look at it this way, if you are an up and coming filmmaker in today's world then it's ok to shoot on digital, there's almost no other way to go. But if you're an established filmmaker then I honestly cannot comprehend why you wouldn't want to shoot on film. Just because it's easier, doesn't mean it's better.
