i have to put my two cents in on the Skyfall bit. Skyfall was honestly not a good movie. The only reason to it's 1billion dollar success was cross promoting it with the biggest event in the world (olympics) , not to mention hosting it in the home town of London ! I am curious of the expectations the studio has for the follow up as I hope they are not expecting a repeat performance. mark mty words, the next bond will not cross 600

So, if Ä° understand corrctly: if a movie is beautiful looking it's all Deakins, when it's not, it's all the director's lack of inspiration.. Bit harsh don't you think? Btw, I'm a big fan of Deakins

Deakins is amazing – the cinematography on SKYFALL is captivating. I've never really paid attention to the cinematographer until I saw that film on IMAX. Can't wait to see Prisioners.

Skyfall!? Please, any Coen brothers movie is better than looking than Skyfall, and it isn't even that good (gorgeous, but not THAT great a movie). Barton Fink, O Brother, No Country, A Serious Man, True Grit, hell Revolutionary Road also by Mendes is far better lensed, helped by the beautiful production design.

It's criminal that Deakins hasn't won yet, he's been deserving so many years and in reality would have on it in 2007 if it weren't for the fact that he is so good he got nominated twice which made people split his votes.

What sucks is that Roger Deakins will receive his 11th Oscar nom this year for Prisoners but will lose to a deserved Emmanuel Lubezki for Gravity, who has 5 Oscar moms himself with no win. The bigger question playlist is, what year should he have one for in the past? He's always solid but it seems every time there is just somebody a little better.

The only 1 billion dollars-grossing films that can match Deakins' work on Skyfall are Nolan's Dark Knight films. Wally Pfister was a damn good cinematographer. Most blockbusters have so ugly, uninspired cinematography. HBO shows have better cinematography than than most generic superhero films.
