Look, we get that you might not like “Juno.” We get that some might not to be able to see the screenplay’s impressive range of voices for the quirky slangfest of the first reel. We see that that girl from high school posting on Facebook about the Moldy Peaches may blind you to the deeply impressive tightrope-walk of tone. And we understand that some dislike writer Diablo Cody because they see her as a self-promoter, and that some have taken against Jason Reitman because his dad directed “Ghostbusters.” And that’s fine.

I think Up in the Air and Juno are terrible. I just don\’t like the movies. There isn\’t a worldwide conspiracy against Cody/Reitman, some people dig their movies, some don\’t. Why do you insist on acting like anyone who doesn\’t like a Reitman or Cody movie has some strange vendetta against them? Can\’t people just be allowed to like/dislike a movie?

I think the problem is that I\’ve rarely, if ever, seen a negative response to those films which are particularly well-thought out. I\’d honestly be delighted to read a take on Juno that took it apart in a way amounting more to \”it\’s for hipsters.\”

I get that people might not like them, that\’s what taste is. But disliking something is different from saying it\’s, objectively, \’terrible,\’ and those films are pretty much expertly constructed.

I agree with Fran–you did make it seem as if people who didn\’t love \”Juno\” were just too dumb to appreciate the nuances. I did understand the story, its subtleties and the arc of the characters, and I thought the performances were very good (Jennifer Garner\’s work in that film was really underrated). Yet I still just found it smug and grating. I don\’t know anything about Diablo Cody so I don\’t have anything against her.

As for movies this fall that no one\’s seen yet–I\’m very curious about \”J. Edgar.\” Is it a Clint hit or miss?

(1) The avoidance of first person here often belies how versatile the staff truly must be; after a weekend when two of your writers had conniptions about family/children movies, here are two (arguably three) on the Five Excited list. (2) Obviously \”no one really cares about\” is not accurate about Paranormal Activity as much as you might wish it so. (3) Why all the Ghostbusters hate of late? Must be one of those old dude things.

won\’t get into my reviews here, but another thing is I think there is a HUGE disconnect between the people who blog/cover/snark on movies for a living, and the people who actually watch them just for fun…people \”in\” the industry might be caught up in things like who a director\’s dad is or Diablo Cody, but those things are pretty inconsequential to most movie goers and even most movie fans who read sites like this and follow movies a bit more closely

Um, no, that is not even close to what I am saying.

(In my opinion) The majority of the movie going public does not know, nor do they give a shit, about things like who was once on the shortlist 3 years ago for a role in the movie they just watched. They don\’t care about whether a screenwriter is or isn\’t popular amongst her peers, or any of the things that get huge run amongst bloggers and big film fans.

While I obviously enjoy reading this site and others, you cannot equate anything written or opinions in the film blogosphere to anything close to reality. So while Diablo Cody\’s \”dialogue\” might be a hot topic amongst bloggers/reviews/etc, most people who saw it just thought it was a clever movie. And some didn\’t.

Again, so while that might have been a \”hot topic\” for bloggers and film buffs, choosing sides between loving Cody and \”unfairly hating her,\” in REALITY, most people who see movies aren\’t even aware of those kind of things and judge the movie they saw simply by whether they liked it or didn\’t like it.
