For those wanting to flex their nerd muscles, there’s a fairly obvious connection between “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Phantasm” — the character of Captain Phasma was named after the 1979 cult classic, after J.J. Abrams noticed that the character reminded him of the metal spheres from the horror flick. And it’s this love of the film that convinced Abrams to allow “Phantasm” director and writer Don Coscarelli to team up with Abrams’ own Bad Robot to produce a remastered 4K version of the film.
The new trailer for “Phantasm: Remastered,” provides our first peek at what the low budget movie looks like after modern technology gets its hands on it. Not only is the movie in 4K, but the sound has also been remastered so that the Tall Man’s creepy voice will sound even better coming out of those multiplex speakers (or at home).
Along with the trailer for the remastered original film, a trailer for the finale of the series, “Phantasm: Ravager” has also been unveiled. Written by Coscarelli, but directed by David Hartman, ‘Ravager’ again finds brothers Mike and Jody fighting the Tall Man once and for all. The actors who have portrayed the brothers since 1979 are back in this final film, as well.
Both “Phantasm: Remastered” and “Phantasm: Ravager” are set to be released October 7 in theaters and VOD.
