Following insiders' comments on Inherent Vice, it seems that Anderson has spent the last near-decade trying to do journey-like, unstructured films like The Master first and now Vice, as if he's following the steps of Robert Altman with California Split or The Long Goodbye, and to go even further I'll be guessing that IV will be closer to California Split than The Long Goodbye in the sense that the Pynchon novel does not dovetail as smoothly as the Chandler one does, now of course adding the whole conspiracy subtext, like a Rivette or a Downey Sr. movie.

So currently I'm expecting dashes of Altman, Rivette and Downey Sr. in this movie. It'll be a wonderful mess, like the best PTA films are.

Alex, I said the two fests were becoming more alike. Of course TIFF chases stars, but for the most part, this was not a significant part of Telluride's personality apart from the tributes until recently. Both fests are run by well-meaning and discerning people. I don't think either is a villain in this, and I'm hoping that several films (not subject to NYFF's implicit requirement on their 3 galas) find their way to both festivals.

If you insist on stoking the "politics" of the festivals, maybe you could make it less obvious who you are rooting for. I think the more accurate comparison would be TIFF as Macy's (or The Bay for locals) and TFF as Tiffany's. TFF is a great fest but it's not a humble mom and pop. Also NYFF doesn't appear to be letting TFF preview its big three galas either. Finally, Punch Drunk Love played TIFF before NYFF, FYI
