YOU DUMB? Stop being an ass. I understand Peppy's point. Even if he or she hadn't read the book, common sense would tell you that a black man who is enslaved for 12 years in the South under various owners is going to come across more than just two other slaves. In fact it is more likely that such a man would interact far more with other slaves (black people) than he would white citizens (even those that are his masters). But as of right now only three black people have been announced as actors for this movie and filming stats at the end of this month. Some people may get paranoid and come to the conclusion that this film will be more about white folks than the black people who suffered under slavery. That's not where I'm coming from. I don't think that will happen. However all the juice so far is about the casting of well-known white actors; even Ejiofor's casting as the so-called lead has been afterthought as soon as it was announced that Fassbender and Pitt were cast as well. And since then we have gotten mostly casting updates of white actors. Don't get me wrong. There are a bunch of talented people being brought into the production and that is exciting. But are we losing track of what the story is about or do we only care if someone like Fassbender will get his Oscar? And, yes, what is up regarding the casting of the other black characters (slave and non-slave)? Is it a matter of the remaining black actors being relatively unknown and therefore not as worthy of a press release, is it that the majority of black parts will just endd up getting cast later or is that the roles of the other black characters have been greatly reduced? Those are all legitimate questions considering the story (based on real-life events) that McQueen is trying to tell. I still have high hopes for the film and I too love the overall quality of performers who are coming aboard, but I am curious about the slow pace of casting regarding the (assumed) key roles of other black people from the book.
