After his brief foray into American TV, it appears that acclaimed Korean filmmaker, Park Chan-wook is heading back to the big screen with his next feature, “Decision to Leave.”
According to Variety, production is expected to begin later this month on “Decision to Leave,” the upcoming drama from “Oldboy” filmmaker Park Chan-wook. The filmmaker has cast Tang Wei (“Lust, Caution”) and Park Hye-il (“Memories of Murder”) to star in the feature. The film follows the story of a detective (Park) that is investigating a murder that occurred in the countryside. However, during his investigation, he begins to develop a relationship with the lead suspect, the victim’s widow (Tang). In addition to Park and Tang, the film will also star Lee Jung-hyun, Go Kyung-pyo, and Park Yong-woo.
As mentioned, “Decision to Leave” marks the first film for Park Chan-wook since 2016’s acclaimed erotic thriller, “The Handmaiden.” He’s also known for features such as “Oldboy,” “Thirst,” and “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.” His latest feature is co-written by Park and frequent collaborator Jeong Seo-kyeong.
While it’s hard to know when “Decision to Leave” might arrive in theaters, it’s almost a given that the feature will first debut at one of the 2021 film festivals. Of course, with COVID-19 still being an issue around the world, it’s unclear when that might be. That being said, if production does begin this month, there’s a chance Park could show up at next year’s Cannes, which is where he premiered his previous film, “The Handmaiden.”
No matter when or where the film premieres, a new Park Chan-wook film is always a good thing and we’re excited as hell to take a look.
