Glad to see BLACK SUNDAY on there. Shamefully underrated film. Probably the best, most nuanced film ever made about terrorism. Dern is ferocious, giving a stunning performance in a brilliantly written scene that gets logically and coherently inside his character's twisted, angry perspective in a way I've rarely ever seen in cinema.

Great piece of work !!! - I've seen all the movies that you've listed above, and I generally agree with your picks. But the ones that i'd like to point out are Cate Blanchett's performance in Little Fish and Meryl Streep's performance in Heartburn.
- Bale has a lot of impressive performances but I think that this year even if he was snubbed for American Hustle, he wouldn't have been missed, his performance was very good but Bobby Redford and especially Hanks should have been there. McConaughey has a lot of impressive performances such as Killer Joe, Magic Mike, Bernie.

"You're so used to seeing Blanchett play icons and goddesses"

Yeah if you've only seen 4 of her roles. She's played all kinds of characters. In The Shipping News she played this really trashy, lowlife slut.

The majority of people haven't actually digged through Blanchett's incredibly varied filmography, and that's why the idea that she plays "regal" characters prevails.

Very, very good article ! It's not often I find myself reading a piece of film, and agreeing with every pick on the writer's list, but your article was that good. McConaughey was brilliant in Frailty, and it's still one of my favorite films today. Big Fish is my favorite of any of Cate Blanchett's performances, and it's a very good movie...You've also picked out the exact roles in the careers of Bale, Adams and DiCaprio, which I also felt were underrated.

The one off topic, small thing that I would maybe disagree on, is that I personally consider Hugo Weaving's Agent Smith to be still, his finest work. He's an actor who's good in everything he's appeared in, especially in films like V for Vendetta, Lord of the Rings and Big Fish. But I remember coming out of a packed theater having just watched The Matrix, which was one of the biggest films back in 1999, and I remember how everybody was talking about Weaving's portrayal as the main villain! He has better acting roles with more depth, but this was the one that blew everyone away.

I remember when Revolutionary Road came, it was the first time I read American film reviews on a large scale.
It was Kate Winslet's year, everyone just knew that she would win an Oscar. And many critics had decided that she was an acting genius. They wrote things like "Surprisingly, DiCaprio almost holds his own against Winslet" or "the great Winslet makes DiCaprio look almost good".
The premise was that DiCaprio was not in any shape or form in her league. Looking back, it seems like the Titanic backlash against him was still really strong.

I think McConaughey's most underrated role was in Steven Spielberg's Amistad. I always liked him in that movie and the humanity that he brought to it. The same film also served as the introduction to Ejiofor and it's wonderful to see his performance as Solomon come full circle with his involvement in this film.
