First and foremost, enjoyable read. Indiewire has been my go to for awards prognostication. The Best Actor race will be nail biting. I\'m not convinced about two older men like Caine and Mckellan both being nominated, though I love them dearly. I\'m pretty convinced Johnny will get a nom. no other actor this year has remotely received the sort of praise that Depp has, review wise. Something about Fassbender doesn\'t completely sit with me, maybe it\'s his lack of physical resemblance. Never count Redmayne out, despite lukewarm reviews, it\'s a good yr, politically speaking and his role is both historical & transformative, the math is perfectly in place for a redmayne win. Don Cheadle will be a huge threat of he makes it in time. Gyllenhal may still get nominated, Weinstein works wonders. That leaves Dicaprio, whose role seems to share moments of pure brutality and intimacy. Currently I have Redmayne as the winner, but Depp can win based on acting praises alone, Fassbender could win because it\'s Jobs, & Dicaprio could easily win because he\'s by far the most popular. Only time will tell, but one things certain, never underestimate the Academy\'s taste or choice. Again, I\'m still going with Redmayne, why? Because when you look at this list he stands out by far. It\'ll take a \'woman\' to make this an obvious win.

Another way to look at this race, let\'s assume Redmayne winning again for the moment. Now come the GG, whoever wins drama will be a standout, almost certified. If Redmayne wins there, then an SAG win is easy, since it\'s the actors branch and they could recognize him for his blatant transformation, they are actors and Redmayne is delivering a very thespian role, the theme of change is his ally, both figuratively and literally. He would easily win the BAFTA considering it\'s his territory. This would be a perfect segue way for an expected and safe Redmayne win. The same could be said for the others, I just use Redmayne as an illustrative point. Dicaprio could win GG drama, come on he fights bears, loses a son, rides horses of of cliffs and is against man and terrain, it screams DRAMA. The SAG could for him, because he is doing something unique this time around, actually inhabiting his character to a literal extent. So again, these things are based on timing, culture, politics, campaigning. Redmayne is great at interviews, but JD and Scott Cooper will surely fire a campaign. Redmayne also has a nov. slot which is probably the most awards friendly month. Dicaprio will have to make up for his Christmas release in screeners, that may work against him.

Enjoyed the read. It makes me so excited to see some of these films. I don\'t think Fassbender can be praised enough for the work he\'s done the last five years and I can\'t wait to see him in Jobs. Dicaprio should be a lock as well. He\'s really continued to improve and seems to have taken on a really wild project, one which I can\'t wait to see. Inarritu > Tarantino. Really glad for Damon, he\'s capable of extremely solid work (Like \'True Grit\' which you mentioned above, he was pretty electric there). Anyway, just psyched to see ALL these.

Something inside tells me Blanchett will score a double nod with Truth and Carol. And since only one "old guy" will probably be nomed, I\'d go Caine over McKellan. I also think Depp will get in over Damon but look for an upset by Will Smith.

Funny enough, my Best Actor predictions only go 2/5 with yours. I have DiCaprio and Fassbender, but then Samuel L. Jackson, Jacob Tremblay, and Michael Caine. I really do think Danish Girl is about to become a giant punching bag for so many different reasons, and it will be lucky to get technical nominations. I\'ve read some of the reviews, and Redmayne is not at all universally praised, but indeed has drawn significant criticism.

For this year\'s race , I think that your 5 picks will be the right one , with one exception- Michele Caine won\'t get a nod . Instead Will Smith will make a comeback to the Awards with "Concussion".It\'s more award-friendly movie "Youth" is too muc a art-house movie and i don\'t think the Academy won\'t go full "white lead" for a second year in a row."Youth" is too much a art-house movie and it has better chances for a supporting nod for Harvey Keitel .

By the way, Ian McKellen did not win for \'Gods and Monsters\' although he was stellar in it. He got two Oscar nominations (the other one was for supporting actor in \'Lord of the Rings\') but has yet to win.

Finally got my hands on a screener of "Grandma", and Lily Tomlin is incredible. I\'m really, really pulling for her. Also, really pulling for Sarah Silverman in "I Smile Back", though I know the chances of that are next to none.
