I really liked Gravity, but I don't understand how movies that are almost entire computer-generated are getting Cinematography awards. It was visually spectacular, but wouldn't the most appropriate award be in the Visual Effects category? I mean, at this point we might as well nominate Frozen for Cinematography because it was pretty.

No one can beat Gravity. A film that is iliminated by the moonlight and you never see the moon. Only the masters can achieve that.

There should be a new category for "digital" cinematography and separate from "Best Visual Effects". Oscars were once awarded in "Black & White" and "Color" categories (from 1939 to 1966). Why not something along those lines now? A digital work could be defined as a work that's 80% digitally manufactured or something like that but it shouldn't be too difficult to establish a standard to classify films one way or the other.

I think Gravity as a film is overrated and so too is it's cinematography. I want Sean Bobbit to win so bad if not for 12 Years a Slave than Place Beyond the Pines earlier this year.

Cinematography is the art of light bouncing off carefully arranged objects (including people) onto film stock (or, sadly, more and more often a sensor) in such a way that the ideas and feelings of a story are brought to life. Whatever the merits of films like Life of Pi and Gravity, their incredible reliance on digital enhancements in post disqualify them from being significant achievements in the pure art.
