Heart soared at the sight of Oscar Isaac\’s name…only to sink at the sight of Natalie Portman. Am I alone in remembering a certain franchise that, ironically, both she and Isaac have appeared in (though not at the same time), which suggested that she and sci-fi don\’t mix so well?

There\’s probably flashback scenes with the husband. Although Control from the second book is supposed to be a latino, so that would fit also.

He is PERFECT for Control! I really hope they\’re not fucking with the source material. Control isn\’t introduced until the second, and best imo, book.

I think the first book is a little slow for a film treatment so he must be doign a lot of changes to find a structure that works. He might play the husband in flashbacks. Or perhaps they will strat before the beginning of the book and he plasy her husband when he returns – that way there would be more of an emotional connection. He would return but transformed/alterred – kinda spooky.

I trust Garland though, and it shows he\’s going to be playing in the world more than directly adapting the novel. Which is for the best as the first book is easily the highlight of the trilogy, where the second two, while ambitious, stumble quite a bit.

First indication that they are changing the source material, as there are no men in the first book. Think he is obviously being signed up for the part of Control, who first appears as the protagonist of the second book. It\’ll take some heavy narrative shifting to venture out of the first books framework to include him while maintaining the thrust of the first novel, which follows only the team inside the zone and never shows the Southern Reach (ie home base… not a spoiler, btw) where Control resides.

This book (and its sequel) are freaky, sad, and amazing science fiction — adding Isaac to this cast makes it my most looked-forward to project in Hollywood right now.
