I watched it and I have to agree that the film was disappointing. There was no reason for the love triangle to exist, and the film was longer than it needed to be. In addition, it felt more like a string of scenes than a cohesive narrative after Michael is captured.

Couldn’t disagree more with this brutal review! Saw the film last night at TIFF. Brilliant. It is a PG-13 film. I’m guessing on purpose. It seems clear the filmmakers wanted a softer ‘Titanic’ sensibility to bring in a wider audience – who’d never go to see a genocide film. The comparisons to edgier films you prefer makes sense but I think you have to as Ebertism to rate the film on it’s intensions. Judging it by it’s ambitions, it is a success. It is not trying to be the experience of ‘Apocalypse Now’.
