Got a Tip?

Original Version of ‘Anchorman’ Sounds Hilariously Bonkers

Everyone loves “Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy” cause the film was absurdist genius. But apparently it was even more off-the-wall in its original inception. AICN talked to Paul Rudd (who played the amazing slimeball, Brian Fontana) about the film its possible sequel (don’t worry, it’s nothing you haven’t already heard) and what the original script was like. WTF, it’s kind of awesome in amazingly mentally-challenged kind of way. The smoking thing makes us laugh.

“The very first versions of ANCHORMAN were unfilmable, by the way. There were so many anchormen on a plane, and they were smoking so much that the plane filled up with so much smoke that the pilots couldn’t see. And, the plane crashed on an island inhabited by orangutans. They were transporting on the plane tons of martial arts equipment, so it turned into kind of like a battle of the apes and anchormen and had orangutans throwing Chinese throwing stars at each other. It was a full-on epic.”

Funny. Rudd is promoting David Wain’s “Role Models,” which was pretty average, outside of some few laughs. It’s cute and harmless, but pretty disposable. Then again, it’s a small, modest little film. And we’re big fans of Wain too. What do we know though, it’s actually charting well on Rotten Tomatoes right now.
