Safe, Far From Heaven, and I\'m Not There all just felt like formal exercises. Once you get past the novelty of the premise of the film itself, the images on the screen, the narrative, the action, just doesn\'t really do anything interesting or surprising. There just seemed to be more ambition than actual execution offered in those films. Haven\'t seen Haynes\'s other films, maybe they\'re better.

Superstar, Poison, Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, and I\'m Not There, were all entertaining, and they were all, perhaps with the exception of I\'m Not There, also visceral experiences. Carol is a completely engrossing film, and the most visceral experience and journey he\'s offered. I would never call it an intellectual film. I suggest you actually watch it before judging it.

Haynes\'s films are more intelligent than they are entertaining. It\'s great if you\'re trying to make a point as a filmmaker, just give us something visceral, too. Each of his films feels like an exercise. He does some interesting things with form and narrative, but not enough to justify the lack of thrills or amazing dialogue, or something extra.
