I think it's admirable to qualify a positive rating with a B+ or A-. Too often, some think that just because they really enjoyed a film it's automatically an A. There obviously had to be some reason which bumped it down a third of a letter grade. And I doubt it is a case of unfairness; in my experience, reviewers are much more prone to over-grade than under-grade. A burst of non-fanboy criticism is refreshing.

I can't believe that anyone would even bother getting upset about a letter grade after reading the obviously favorable review. Laughably pathetic. Anyway, I caught this yesterday and I couldn't wait for it to be over. I understand, and appreciate, the overarching ideas behind the plot about human need to connect on real levels and that love can't be virtualized or taken for granted, etc. However, the way that it all plaid out felt so contrived and so obviously fictional. It was extremely difficult for me to suspend disbelief and accept the character of Samantha as an actual computer and not just an off screen actor. Maybe that actually speaks for the intention of the film because we are supposed to feel as if she is real, since she is real to Theodore. I just couldn't help but notice the seams, here. I feel that everything this film had to say about connections and love and acceptance was said WAY better in Lars and the Real Girl which was more subtle, more emotional, and more charming all around. I'm sad to say I was wildly disappointed with Her because I was really expecting to love it. If Her was a road trip through our hearts, feelings, and the way we connect in modern (and postmodern) society then I appreciate the destination but the ride itself was bumpy and painful to get through.

Just saw this at the NYFF screening and it's positively THE best movie I have seen this year. And your final grading is really quite inconsistent with what you expressed in the review. It reads like a solid A to me.

Yes, a beautifully articulated review of a beautiful film -- a review that, indeed (re TJ's comment below), is not reflected by your ambiguous rating. Sounds like a solid A, though not an A+ due to your one caveat. Anyway, I can't wait to see this again . . . sharing with a dear friend, of course.

Yes, great review, although you're harsh with your grading. I guess one can just pretend it isn't there.
