As for the writer complaining that the director's musical knowledge seems to stop at 1981: would you rather see some Gym School Rejects or Bon Iver? Not quite the same effect as The Stones or Traffic. At least drug and alcohol addicts over the age of 30 know their good music.

The first 40 mins. with the crash were I felt the best part of the film. Even though you knew how it would end it was riveting and very realistically staged. Perhaps Zemeckis could try his hand at an action pic -- like the next Bond.

The version of "Feelin' Alright" in the film is sung by Joe Cocker, not Traffic.

I agree -- the choice of songs was about as subtle as a sledgehammer. I don't have a problem with the era the songs originated from (see just about any Wes Anderson movie), but I thought the selection was one of the weakest parts of the film and not up to par with Zemeckis' skills. They just telegraphed too much of what was going on.

I did find the hotel scene where Denzel's character hops off the wagon to stretch credibility.

Other than that, this was a riveting look at substance abuse, addition, fooling one's self and redemption with fine, fine acting all around. It was amazing nearly all of the characters in Whip's life were enablers, not really stoppers to his alcoholism.

While this movie does not reach the heights of even Cast Away or Contact,it is a very stirring movie.

Really looking forward to more introductory steadicam shots of John Goodman walking with bouncy 60s rock'n'roll on the soundtrack. Can't get enough of those.
