A comedian decides to get serious and instead makes a movie chock full of unearned bathos. Wow. What a shocker. Scratch the surface on any comedian and you'll find a sentimental fool who wants nothing more than to make you cry, make you FEEL, goddammit. Same old story.

Thank you! I saw this at the press screening and was surprised by how much people laughed and then praised the film. I agree with what you say and have several other complaints to add. The whole film is one long upbeat, and thus one-note, series of visual and verbal clichÃ©s. I wanted to like it because of its strong cast, and Ben Stiller is quite funny. See it for yourselves. I just saw it at NYFF and was extremely moved. I disagree with nearly everything the reviewer says. One of the most cinematic, enjoyable movies of the year.

I think the term you were looking for was "AWESOME-looking beard". That beard kicks ass and it says a lot about a reviewer's sensibilities that they just HAVE TO point out that a beard isn't credible. However, I can't wait to read more from The Playlist hipster geniuses who will – like the drones that they are – fall into line and bash this film throughout Oscar season.

The film's not good but that scene with Sean Penn is beautiful. He just puts the film into a whole other level, even if its for a few minutes..
