Both Carpenter's film and the Howard Hawks production were based on a short story called "Who Goes There?" by William Campbell. Carpenter's film is more faithful to that story, carrying over character names, etc and the nature of the creature itself unlike the Hawks version which featured a walking plant man (easier on the 50s budget they had to work with).

I'm sure they are going to cop out and have someone survive even though in the original it was clear everyone in that camp dies. Also a cop out, casting a female in the movie. I'm not trying to be sexist, but one of the coolest things about the original is that it is one of the few films that feature no female characters. I don't know why they didn't want a female scientist but I think it makes it more believable because in their situation with that type of isolation, a single female could cause a lot of problems.
