I could say the soundtrack is better than the movie, but in this case that would be utterly not logical. In my opinion, they're quite complementary.

He's in love with her, and she's sort of in love with him, so the way they end up feeling about it later is complicated, but still: Noodles RAPES her against her very clear protestations, and destroys their relationship because he's a self-destructive criminal incapable of controlling his own lusts. She ends up involved with his friend anyway and never gets away from the criminal world, so how on earth does the rape protect her in any way? Doesn't surprise me that Leone is one of Refn's big heroes, though–can definitely see some influence there.

"it built buzz to a deafening crescendo" – maybe it did at festivals or in the online film community and blogosphere, but that is not in any way remotely a fair judge of actual buzz for the movie going public. It may have packed festival screenings or critics screenings, but the movie opened to scarcely populated screenings in release. "Buzz" doesn't make a movie successful, especially when it is manufactured by sites like this one. The Playlist can mention Refn 5 times a day about his "Logan's Run" and "Wonder Woman" movies but that doesn't mean anything in reality.
