“The Pigeon Tunnel”
After two detours into docu-series and mini-series TV, Oscar-winning filmmaker Errol Morris (“The Thin Blue Line,” ”The Fog Of War”)” returns to feature-length film for the documentary, “The Pigeon Tunnel,” pulling back the curtain on the career of former British spy John Le Carré, author of such classic espionage novels as “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold,” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The film spans six decades as le Carré delivers his final and most candid interview, punctuated with rare archival footage and dramatized vignettes.
“The Curse”
The long-awaited Showtime series makes its world premiere at NYFF 2023, and it’s the rare time NYFF allows TV in its showcase, but the creative principles make sense. The show comes from a rare trio: Nathan Fielder, Benny Safdie, and Emma Stone. Fielder and Stone play married entrepreneurs (not gentrifiers, apparently!) who flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española, New Mexico—all for an HGTV-style reality show. Three eps premiere at NYFF, with the series to follow in the fall on Showtime.
“Hit Man“
Recently scooped up by Netflix for a whopping $20 million, Richard Linklater’s pop noir hitman thriller, “Hit Man,” is said to be his most entertaining film in years. It’s also been described as a new action comedy, and it stars “Top Gun: Maverick” break star Glenn Powell and Adria Arjona; known for Tony Gilroy’s “Star Wars” series “Andor” and HBO’s “Ima Vep” by all accounts, it’s a big fun, a crowd-pleaser with sex appeal and humor.
