The greatest series of my childhood was the BBC version of \’Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy\’ and \’Smiley\’s people\’.
I can only pray this is as good, I adore the new cast but remember Tom Hardy\’s role as being quite small in the BBC, which is a pity because I love his work.
And it has to be said that Alec Guiness was one of the greatest actors ever, the understatement of his performance in this is something else. Best of luck to Colin Firth, can\’t wait to see the movie.

I\’m really really disappointed with that the role of Peter Guillam has been downgraded into a small role in this movie.

Oh…well, good luck to the film, if they did change the story arch that much, I think I\’ll just wait and watch its clips showing on Youtube.

Janewright, I understand Peter Guillam\’s origins as a character in the novel (certainly a much cooler character in it and the other books) but I\’m basing myself on the script for the film which I\’ve read. In it, he\’s Smiley\’s right hand and still has the scene where he steals documents from within the Circus\’ registry but other than that he barely has any lines, not even as Smiley\’s chaffeur like in the miniseries. By contrast, Ricky Tarr is the guy who kicks off the plot in a rather memorable way.

Actually in the original novel of TTST, Peter Guillam is a principal character. It\’s the character Ricky Tarr played by Tom Hardy is the relatively minor character. You can check the reference on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Guillam

I hope the director, screen writer and the studios won\’t change the story arch too much just to sell the movie by Colin Firth\’s new Oscar winner title and Tom Hardy\’s new fame from Inception, and the studios are quite ignorant not to utilize Benedict Cumberbatch\’s world-widely new fame acquired from BBC Sherlock.

carrefan, Cumberbatch plays Peter Guillam which means he has a small role character-wise. Little more than a plot device now that the narrative has been shortened to two hours. I\’m sure his period hairstyle will be as interesting as Tom Hardy\’s, though. As an aside, Mark Strong as Jim Prideaux is inspired casting since he\’s a far cry from the original miniseries\’ Ian Bannen.

I hope they film the rest of the trilogy as well. Especially the Honourable Schoolboy, which the BBC never adapted.

Looking at the cast list, John Hurt clearly\’ll play Control and Firth, well, I suppose Firth plays Bill Haydon aka Tailor. They \’re making it real easy for the audience, aren\’t they?

All 3 look great, as does this movie. At least Firth and Oldman will get nominated for their work, because they never disapoint
