With Sandra Bullock…savin' that poor obese black child? No, then I'll choose the side where I don't dismiss auteurs who've made one or two films I didn't like as much as the others. I don't know how you can't see this list as a prediction of some of the people you'll invariably be dissapointed with in the future. If we had your 2005 list, I'm sure some of the dissapointments would be on your Breaking Through list. This is the nature of a director's career, they become renowned for one thing, and either keep stabbing at that same thing and make blogger go cold, or unsuccessfuly try something new and make bloggers angry they aren't making movies like they used to. Short-sighted, these lists are.

(Side note: What is it about this site that you guys are so hyper-defensive about your articles and opinions. Surely the text you're creating can stand on its own and not fall to the ground when one reader gives their opinion regarding its merit. Multiple articles have one of you guys attacking the character of anyone who criticizes you, seems like a confidence problem to me.)

Both of the two central ones are pretty fantastic, and while I'll agree Meadows has no real tangible style to speak of, his preference for realism over histrionics is something I give him some credit for. No missteps so far either, even if I agree that "Somers Town" is a little slight—it's still a very honest, natural little film, free of pretense. He's the working man's auteur.

The wasp hitting the window in Wasp was a bit annoying, but the time spent on Fish Tank with the horse tied to the rock/balloon being set free is a tad amateurish.

That being said, she does make consistently interesting films.
