The flash-forwards, when done effectively and sparingly, added a sense of dread to the entire season.

There was always going to be a season two, because now the main character finally is John. How do his actions effect him? The family?

The flash forwards were completely necessary! One of the brilliant things about the show, and part of building for Season 2, is that you realize in Part 9 that John is talking to someone else. The entire time, you believe he is narrating for the viewer--then he finishes his monologue in Part 9. In the flash forwards, the viewer clearly sees that Danny is dead and that John disposed of his body. When John finishes his narration, he says he doesn\'t know what happened to his brother--but wherever he is etc. Part 9 is the first time you come to realize that John is an unreliable narrator. In the final episode, you find out who he was addressing. To me, this brilliantly creates even more mystery as the viewer realizes that the ENTIRE story was told from John\'s POV--and John is a liar. This is certain to play a role in the second season. I think the flash forwards were a truly artful device that helped the show play with concepts of perspective which make the show even more compelling.

I agree with John. When the show reached episode 13 I had a bad feeling they were going to find someway to screw it up and leave a thread open to connect into a second season, and they did in the worst way possible. As much as I enjoy the other actors I just can\'t see the show being in the same ball park without the performance and character Mendelsohn brought. As much as I wanted his character dead by the end, the last episode felt flat and an anticlimax without him.

Good article and I mostly agree. The show is great. The flash-forwards were completely unnecessary. I know no one at Netflix would agree with this but there is no reason to end on a cliffhanger with this story and have continuing seasons. This was Danny\'s story and it\'s wrapped. Take out the flash-forwards and end the family\'s arc completely in episode 13 and this would have been a top-tier show for me. 13 and out. Done.

I\'m not sure a show that kills off its two most (only?) compelling characters in the first season can survive. I enjoyed the first season, but without Robert and Danny Rayburn, I don\'t know if I have a reason to stick around for the second season.

Excellent piece. "Bloodline" snuck up on me after a slow-ish start. More people need to be talking about this. One of the best dramas of the season.
