Even if money did change hands, I think it's distracting when movies want to be set in the "real world" and there are intentional knockoff brand names or NO brands at all. I think The Playlist had some horseshit complaint about House of Cards having too much product placement, but they were all totally organic to the subject and the characters.

Basically: it's 2013, can we get over this hangup we have about seeing a Burger King billboard or the BMW logo on a car the character drives?

Its a perfect use of logos, in my opinion. It adds to the familiarity of the environnement in the film. I am certain it will enhance the experience as the world Blomkamp has created will actually feel like OUR world.
So pumped for this film. Even moreso now.

Of course it's acceptable. Money didn't switch hands–and it's obvious the director did this so he could make the film feel more "real" and authentic. I actually think it's kinda neat.
