Thanks for the list.

I was just wondering what you thought of these releases:

-Alamar
-Dogtooth
-Enter the Void
-Nostalgia For the Light
-The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu
-The Illusionist
-White Material

Not saying they should be on your list (because it\'s yours), but curious as to your opinions, which I like some of the time.

@dudu Didn\'t realize there was a nationality quote on top ten lists. But for me, this was a pretty weak year for international film -- if I had done a top fifteen or twenty \"A Prophet\" probably would have snuck on there (now that I realize its a 2010 release, oops) and if I bent my own rules, \"The Secret In Their Eyes\" definitely. But overall? Can\'t really say many international films really rocked my world this year. All you have to do is look at the Cannes line up this year to see how weak it was.

@Leah I see what you\'re saying, but you also have to remember that during the present-day scenes we\'re seeing these characters at their worst and most unlikeable. For me, the heartbreak is in the relationship, it\'s dissolution, the promise it had now diminished.

Yeah, what is up with all the old people talking. They are the worst! It\'s like they\'ve forgotten they\'re not a home in front of their TVs. I\'ve shushed, I\'ve asked politely, I\'ve had shouting matches with the 40 plus crowd. Nothing works except moving as far away from the talkers as possible unless you want to ruin the flow of the movie itself and narc to the management who may or may not do something, especially at the kind of art house venue that\'s likely to be showing LANDSCAPE IN THE MIST. It\'s not the big assholes in life that bug me. It\'s the movie-talkers and dog-shit leavers I wish I could vaporize. Happy New Year!

Nice picks Kevin... though I don\'t understand what the hub-bub is about on Blue Valentine. I would watch Gosling or Williams read the phone book, but their characters here I found unsympathetic, and throughout the screening was asking myself \"what about this script had everyone holding on for years and years?\" I was expecting it to break my heart, but I truly stopped caring about the relationship before we were half-way in. Perhaps it was the over-bearing, yet over-sensitive nature of Gosling\'s character that left a bad taste in my mouth (due to personal preferences?) but really I found it hard to sympathize with either of their characters.

eh, it just felt too straight-laced and structured for something as messy as its subject matter. I get that the structure was important for trivial details like tension and plot development, it just never got off the ground for me.

Of the 4 or 5 dreams only the Joseph Gordon-Levitt (level 2?) felt really vital and imaginative. I\'ll hand it to Nolan that the dream-within-a-dream-etc. was by far the cleverest thing I saw in a movie all year. And he can assemble a better cast and crew than any working director.

Seeing as 127 hours and True Grit were my top 2 this year, I gotta give it up for your picks. Would have swapped out that ridiculous film where dreams were governed by precise rules for, I don\'t know, White Material or the trailer for Tree Of Life, but otherwise bravo.

The Loved Ones also would have made my top 10, but I\'m kind of thinking that little gem might never get distribution. So so sad. I guess I can console myself knowing it\'ll be a cult classic someday.

I don\'t quite understand why a perceived lack of female characters in The Social Network is detrimental to it\'s quality.
Rooney Mara\'s opening 5 minutes carry throughout the remaining 1hr45min. And Rashida Jones does enough to be remembred too.

I think the point you made is a counterpoint to that argument:
\"There is something frightening here about these young A-type personalities, our future technology leaders, waging war on keyboards with seemingly no limits to what they’ll do to earn their place on the top of the heap.\"

These guys were probably never around that many girls to begin with all the programming they do and workload they have. The ratio of ladies to guys in software engineering or computer science is way too low to begin with, so having several female characters probably wouldn\'t give a fair picture of what the culture they were immersed in was really like. Hence the obsession with final clubs. Man, that opening 5 minutes really set the tone.
