Good explanations of why you chose each movie. Funny though that your number 2 pick, Rampart, was on QT's worst of the year list. I haven't seen it yet, so I can't pick a side but that's some disconnect there. But on the otherhand, Drive was my number one film (as it was with many othees) and it landed on his "Nice Try" list, whatever that means. So I assume it's him with the problem 🙂 Also, easily my favorite moment in film this year would be the final round of the fight between the brothers in Warrior. That National song playing as Edgerton confesses his feelings toward his brother as he gets him to tap out was soul stirring. I imagine it's hard to dislike that scene no matter what you thought as the movie as a whole.

Not sure why "Shame" backlash is in season, but the last fucking time, THE CHARACTER'S LOW POINT IS NOT THE GAY CLUB.

People hate, find an easy target and then run with it. Come on. I'd hate to spoil but If you want to talk about low points I can think of a few objectively worse things than that.

Shame is The Passion of the Christ of sex films. I'm just after seeing it, and I wish I'd gone to a church and stared at a crucifix for two hours instead. Oh my god, he's reached the lowest circle of Dante's Inferno: a gay club! Overwrought, quasi-Puritan nonsense, imo.

Agree with a lot of your picks. I agree with the other person who talked about Hugo I saw it in theaters while I was feeling sad and it was so beautiful and charming I couldn't stop smiling. An older gentlemen next to me was crying at the end which made the experience in all very beautiful and memorable.

The scene that you mention in Young Adult is probably one of the most polarizing scenes I've seen in a film in a loooong time. I think it's a testament to Diablo Cody's ability to write a damn good screenplay and Theron and Wolf's obvious talent that it plays out in such a brilliant fashion. I was seriously watching it with my hands over my eyes. The meltdown scene on the front lawn is one of the best acting moments this year. "I hate this town it smells like fish shit!" That scene refuses to leave my memory.

I've grown so weary of seeing this word used in every film review. Filmmaking IS manipulation. Manipulation is the basis of everything we call filmmaking. There's certainly good manipulation and bad manipulation, but all filmmaking is manipulation.

It's sad that Hugo couldn't make your top film list and only gets honorable mention. I didn't find the film long at all or sluggish near the end and savored every beautiful minute. It will be considered one of Scorsese's best films in the future. The film hasn't set box office records and I wonder if it's because it doesn't star Leonardo diCaprio — or maybe audiences would rather watch more action.
